Hydraulic Cylinder

Description:

A Hydraulic Cylinder is a mechanical actuator used to give a unidirectional force through a unidirectional stroke. It converts hydraulic energy (pressurized fluid) into linear mechanical force and motion.

In heavy machinery, such as excavators, dozers, loaders, and attachments like hydraulic breakers, hydraulic cylinders are critical for movement—lifting, pushing, tilting, angling, or controlling attachments.

Description

Main Parts of a Hydraulic Cylinder

1. Cylinder Barrel

  • Houses the pressurized fluid and guides the piston.

  • Made of seamless high-tensile steel tubing.

2. Piston

  • Located inside the barrel.

  • Separates the pressure zones and pushes against hydraulic force.

3. Piston Rod (Chrome Rod)

  • Extends out of the barrel.

  • Transfers the force generated by the piston to external equipment (like a blade or breaker).

  • Often chrome-plated to resist corrosion and wear.

4. Rod End / Mounting End

  • The attachment point at the rod’s end (clevis, eye, etc.) for connecting to machinery or attachments.

5. Cylinder Head / Gland

  • Contains seals and wipers.

  • Supports the rod and guides it as it moves in and out.

6. Cylinder Cap / End Cap

  • Seals the cylinder at the opposite end of the rod.

  • May also act as a mounting point.

7. Seals and Wipers

  • Prevent fluid leakage and contamination.

  • Common types: O-rings, U-cups, wipers, backup rings.

8. Ports (Inlet/Outlet)

  • Entry/exit points for hydraulic fluid.

  • Can be side-mounted or rear-mounted.

9. Retaining Rings & Fasteners

  • Hold the gland or cap in place.

  • Secure internal components.

🧰 Hydraulic Cylinder – In Use with Hydraulic Breaker

Hydraulic cylinders used in a hydraulic breaker system are usually part of:

  • Positioning Arms or Mount Brackets

  • Tilt and Swivel Mechanisms

  • Boom and Stick Movement

While the breaker itself uses hydraulic pistons internally (not externally visible), external hydraulic cylinders help position and control the breaker attachment.
